About the role

Are you passionate about preserving and promoting heritage collections? We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Archivist to join the School of Heritage and Culture at the University of Leicester, providing maternity leave cover for the internationally significant Archive of the British Institute for Libyan and Northern African Studies (BILNAS).

As Archivist, you will play a pivotal role in managing and developing collections that document the archaeology, history and culture of Libya and North Africa. Working closely with academic colleagues and archive stakeholders, you will catalogue and appraise collections, oversee digitisation projects, support researchers and students, and help showcase these valuable resources to a wider audience.

This is a varied and rewarding role offering a high degree of autonomy. You will have the opportunity to work with unique archival materials, collaborate with archive professionals across the UK, contribute to research and engagement projects, and improve access to collections for international audiences

About you

We're looking for someone who is excited by the challenge of bringing archive collections to life and making them accessible to diverse audiences.

You will have experience working within an archive environment and be confident in archival appraisal, cataloguing and collection management. You will be equally comfortable working independently and collaborating with researchers, students, donors and professional partners.

You will be highly organised, proactive and detail-focused, with excellent communication skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities. Experience using CALM, or a similar collections management system, will enable you to quickly contribute to the ongoing development of the archive.

Candidates with knowledge of archaeological collections, North African heritage, digitisation projects, copyright and data protection principles will be particularly welcomed.

Whether you are an established archivist looking for your next challenge or a professional seeking the opportunity to work with unique international collections, we would love to hear from you.
