The School of Geography, Geology & the Environment is seeking to make an academic appointment at Lecturer (Grade 8) level in Environmental Geoscience. We are looking to strengthen the interface between our research in Applied Geology, Environmental Science, and Health & Sustainability through research underpinned by knowledge in spatial analysis and/or big data. As a Lecturer on a teaching and research contract, you will play a key role in the development of our research portfolio and also make significant contributions to the delivery of our high-quality undergraduate and post-graduate teaching programmes.
Our strength in applied geology has primarily been focused on mineral exploration. Through the Centre for Sustainable Resource Extraction we have a growing body of work at the interface with sustainability and environmental issues, including major active research projects around the circular economy in minerals, and the remediation of mine tailings in the Philippines. In environmental science, we have expertise in the mathematical modelling of environmental systems with particular interest in the chemical transfer between agricultural land to ground and surface waters. Since 2018, staff within the School also play a key role in the Centre for Environment, Health and Sustainability where our research crosses over with life sciences and interacts closely in the area of Health research.
As a School we have Undergraduate programmes ranging across disciplines from Geology, through Environmental Science, to Geography, all emphasising critical thinking and the development of a suite of quantitative and qualitative research skills. Through the use of innovative teaching and assessment methods, we encourage our students to be aware of the relationship between the physical understanding of processes and the impact we have on the modern world. At the postgraduate level we have programmes in GIS, Satellite Data Science, and Environmental Futures.
