About the role

The Midlands Regional Cryo-EM Facility was established in 2018 to provide access to high-end microscope and computational facilities to the Universities of Leicester, Birmingham, Nottingham and Warwick. Today it serves users from around the UK and Europe for both academic and industry projects. Together with the strong structural biology background present in the Midlands, Cryo-EM is helping to answer many exciting and important biological questions for our researchers.

We seek to employ an Experimental Officer to help with the running of the facility based at the Leicester Institute of Structural and Chemical Biology. You will work with the facility manager to assist and train users on all aspects of Cryo-EM including sample preparation, data collection and data processing. The facility houses a TFS Titan Krios G3 equipped with a Bioquantum-K3, Volta phase plate and a Falcon 3. Recent upgrades for fringe-free illumination and aberration-free image-shift are resulting in up to 900 micrographs/hour of high-quality data.

The facility also houses a 200kV FEG screening microscope with side-entry holder, automated and manual sample vitrification devices, glow-discharge and carbon coating units. We also closely collaborate with the neighbouring Biological EM facility with a 120kV TEM for negative staining, SEM etc.

Together with the Facility Manager, you will be responsible for the day to day running and maintenance of the facility interacting with both internal and external users. There will be opportunities to collaborate internally on exciting structural biology projects that may be of interest to you ranging from transcriptional regulation to phage biology.

The facility promotes outreach and education of our Midlands partners and you will also be involved in annual Cryo-EM workshops to train the next generation of Cryo-EM scientists as well as interacting regularly with our Midlands users on all aspects of Cryo-EM. Finally the facility is part of a 5 year Wellcome Trust training initiative lead by the University of Leeds to provide Cryo-EM training to users around the world.

About us

The Leicester Institute of Structural and Chemical Biology (LISCB) is a cross-disciplinary entity that brings together internationally renowned research in structural biology, single molecule approaches and chemical biology at the University of Leicester into a single world-leading unit. The Institute takes advantage of synergies in research technologies and approaches to deliver major advances in both fundamental and translational research. The Institute provides access to world-class research facilities, including X-ray crystallography, biological NMR spectroscopy, single molecule microscopy and hosts the state-of-the-art Midlands cryo-EM facility.

LISCB has dedicated facility managers supporting biological NMR spectroscopy, biophysical instrumentation, the Midlands cryo-EM facility and high-performance computing.

About you

If you are an enthusiastic structural biologist that enjoys helping and educating scientists and would like to continue conducting research on collaborative projects then this position could be for you. This is a permanent Grade 7 position with excellent University benefits.

Additional information
