About the role
The EPSRC funded project SonoCat aims to develop more circular approaches to recover technology metals such as Au, Ni, In, Bi from complex devices. Using focused ultrasound combined with novel catalytic lixiviants the project aims to selectively recover technology metals. The project is carried out in collaboration with the University of Glasgow where novel ultrasonic devices will be constructed and tested for the project. The project will involve collaborating closely with Glasgow and with industrial partners.

The project will recycle materials from a variety of devices such as mobile phones, batteries, solar cells, magnets, printed circuit boards and fuel cells. Novel methods will be developed for recycling metals with the aim of achieving selective dissolution and recovery as well as working with manufacturers to provide advice on product design to make to simplify recycling. The project will use a variety of green solvent systems and dissolution methods such as electrocatalysis to delaminate layered structures such as printed circuit boards and thermoelectric devices. The project will also use life cycle analysis and technoeconomic analysis to assess the impact of the techniques developed compared to conventional technology.

As a Research Associate on the SonoCat project you will conduct sample preparation, testing and analysis using a variety of electrochemical, thermal, mechanical, spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Working with other members of the team you will prioritise experiments and oversee undergraduate students (BSc/MChem) working in the materials centre. You will also be responsible for management of all laboratory facilities to ensure efficient progress towards project goals and compliance with Health and Safety regulations.
About you
You will hold a PhD in Chemistry with experience of laboratory management and the supervision and support of students. With a proven analytical and problem solving capability, you will be pro-active and be motivated by working toward the emergence of new understanding within the field. You'll be a strong communicator with excellent interpersonal skills, being able to work comfortably both in a team and independently.
