About the role

The University of Leicester and the Natural Environment Research Council have recently invested in a new state-of-the-art reference spectroscopy facility, dubbed SPENSER (SPectroscopy for ENvironmental SEnsing Research), located at the new Space Park Leicester.  The principal instrument of this facility is a Bruker IFS 125HR spectrometer, with spectral coverage in the mid- and near-infrared regions and spectral resolution up to 0.0015 cm-1

We are looking for a Research Associate to help set up the new facility, and design experiments to measure the infrared spectra of pure and air-broadened ammonia.  A multispectrum fitting approach will then be used to derive new spectroscopic line parameters based on non-Voigt lineshapes.  It is anticipated that the results will be of interest to the international community via the HITRAN database, and will be utilised in ammonia retrievals from satellite instruments such as the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) and the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI).  The successful candidate will work within the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) at the University of Leicester under the supervision of Dr Jeremy Harrison.

About you

You will have a PhD (or be close to completing) in physics, chemistry, or a field related to molecular spectroscopy.  You will be adept at taking measurements in the laboratory and analysing data, with experience in any field of spectroscopy.  You will have a proven track record in conducting high quality research, and an ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
