About the role

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester conducts world leading research and instrumentation development to advance knowledge for the public good. The Department’s capability is demonstrated by its portfolio of both space and ground based instrumentation. For over 50 years, instruments built by the Department have been successfully operating both in space and around the world. This success is expected to continue into the future. To achieve this, the Department works closely with leading space organisations such as NASA and the European Space Agency and has an internal engineering team tasked with taking scientific instruments from initial concept to construction, deployment and into operation.

In this role you will to support the construction, deployment and development of novel electronic hardware for both ground and space based instrumentation. You will work within a small team, supported by a senior electronics engineer and an electronics technician and work with a wider team of mechanical, thermal and product assurance engineers. The position will offer an excellent career development opportunity with a varied and diverse workload.

Initial work will focus on the construction and deployment of a scientific radar in Finland.

About you
You will hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering subject and have detailed knowledge of digital and analogue electronics. You will be experienced in programming low level hardware and have a genuine interest in electronics, demonstrated by previous experience either in or outside of work.

With a proven analytical and problem solving capability, you will be pro-active and be motivated by working toward the emergence of new understanding within the field.You'll be a strong communicator with excellent interpersonal skills, being able to work comfortably both in a team and independently. You will be able to work with minimal supervision, prioritising your own workload to deal with urgent tasks, while maintaining a high standard of accuracy and attention to detail.
