About the role

This post is for a Lecturer specialising in Structural Biology. You will be based in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, within the College of Life Sciences. You will also be a Principal Investigator within the Leicester Institute of Structural and Chemical Biology (LISCB). Teaching contributions will be aligned to and overseen by the School of Biological Sciences.

You will undertake research and enterprise activity, teaching, administration and other duties to support the work of the Department, Institute and College, to develop and enhance its reputation for research, enterprise and teaching excellence. The appointee will also provide a high-quality contribution to the teaching in the School of Biological Sciences.

About you

We wish to appoint an excellent and enthusiastic researcher and teacher. The Institute is particularly interested in candidates who will bring expertise in single-particle cryo-electron microscopy, but with an interest in using other structural biology techniques, including X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. The ideal candidate work on an important biological problem to solve using structural biology, which is complementary and synergistic with existing research interests in the institute.

You will have an established record of research achievement, as demonstrated by publications in leading journals and will take an active role in further enhancing the Institute’s research profile.

You will either already have an appropriate teaching qualification, e.g. HEA fellowship, or a commitment to achieving one.

Additional information

Informal enquiries are welcome and should be made via email to either Professor John Schwabe (Director LISCB: john.schwabe@leicester.ac.uk) or to Professor John Challiss (Head MCB: jc36@leicester.ac.uk)

The Leicester Institute of Structural and Chemical Biology (LISCB) is a cross-disciplinary entity that brings together internationally renowned research in structural biology and chemical biology at the University of Leicester into a single world-leading unit. The Institute takes advantage of synergies in research technologies and approaches to deliver major advances in both fundamental and translational research. The Institute provides access to world-class research facilities, including X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy and hosts the Midlands cryo-EM facility with a state-of-the-art Titan Krios G3.

The Midlands cryo-EM facility has a dedicated EM facility manager and a Computing facility manager. It also boasts:

For the FEI Titan Krios G3:

  • High-brightness X-FEG gun
  • Three lens condenser system for parallel sample illumination
  • 80 to 300 kV
  • Constant Power lens design for optimal mode switching between LM-HM imaging and diffraction
  • Autoloader for robotic sample handling and loading of up to 12 samples
  • Falcon 3EC Camera
  • Gatan K3 Camera with Bioquantum Energy Filter
  • Volta Phase Plate for close to focus, high-contrast, data acquisition: Ideal for smaller (<200 kDa) macromolecular complexes
  • Thermo Fisher EPU: Software for automated single particle collection
  • Falcon 3EC and K3 fully embedded
  • Aberration free image-beam shift with K3 in counting mode yields > 200 micrographs per hour
  • Thermo Fisher Batch Tomography: Software for automated tomogram collection
  • Serial EM: Software for automated single particle and tomogram collection

A second microscope: Philips CM200

  • High-brightness FEG gun
  • 120 to 200 kV
  • Side-entry Gatan 626 cryo-holder
  • TVIPS F224HD 2k×2k CCD camera
