About the role

We are looking for a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate to join the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester. You will be working as part of the SMILE project, the Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE) is a joint European Space Agency (ESA) and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) science mission due for launch at the end of 2024. The University of Leicester is the Principal Investigator (PI) Institute for the Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) instrument on SMILE. The SXI will enable the use of global imaging to detect the location of boundaries within the Earth’s magnetosphere and their movement as a result of changing solar wind pressure.

This position will involve working on the SXI ground Pipeline Processing Software (SXIPPS) used to convert instrument and spacecraft data into useable science data products for the scientific community. You will contribute to the development of software tasks and documentation for the SXIPPS whilst ensuring the SXIPPS meets the scientific needs of the project by actively engaging with the SXI project team involved in the development of the instrument and associated activities such as instrument performance simulation and ground calibration. 

This position is available as either a Research Associate (Grade 7) or a Senior Research Associate (Grade 8) dependent on knowledge, experience and career stage.
About you
You'll be educated to PhD level or equivalent in computer science or physics with experience of developing and coding major software packages in high level (e.g. Fortran, C++) and interpreted (e.g. Python) software languages. You will be able to demonstrate your experience of meeting project goals and have a proven record of producing project deliverables on time.
