We are seeking an exceptional candidate for the position of Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Life Sciences, to succeed Professor Philip Baker, who has led the College successfully for six years.

The College of Life Sciences is an interdisciplinary, dynamic and modern environment for study and research, built on decades of highly respected achievement. The College is a thriving community of academic expertise based in laboratory, clinical, health and social science settings. With some of the newest purpose-built scientific accommodation in the country, the resources of the University and the city’s excellent facilities we have a track record of innovation that we believe few can match. The College has nearly a thousand staff and approaching 4,000 students with growing student numbers in its four schools, which cover the biological, medical and human sciences. We offer a wide range of courses and expertise, with our quality recognised throughout the scientific community.  Our achievements include the development of DNA fingerprinting, vital advances in fighting heart disease, cancer, respiratory diseases, diabetes and COVID-19, as well as our joint international medical college with Leicester’s twin city of Chongqing.

The University is looking for candidates who have outstanding academic records, including a research profile of high quality. As an innovative and strategic thinker, the successful candidate will have experience of significant leadership and management, preferably within Higher Education. Able to contribute at the highest level of the University, the appointed candidate will have a passion for the future success of the institution and the leadership experience to represent the University to a range of partners.  

As a member of the Executive Board, you will help to shape the University’s future strategic direction and drive its implementation. This is a significant and challenging role for a candidate of the highest calibre who will inspire others to achieve their best, with the vision and drive to ensure that there is a lasting legacy of excellence and innovation in all that the College of Life Sciences seeks to achieve.

In order to meet these expectations, the successful candidate will have experience in financial and strategic planning and the formulation of policy advice at a high level. You will have a reputation for harmonious working relationships with staff at all levels and will be an effective manager with good communication skills. Energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to contributing at the highest level to the challenges likely to be presented by the development of the College in a period of considerable change are essential.

This appointment is initially for a four year period, with the potential for a further four year term. When the term is completed, you will be offered a Professorial position on a permanent basis.

Consideration will be given to the appointed candidate, with suitable experience to the appointment to the Dean of Medicine position.
