About the role

Joining the Leicester Cardiovascular Bioresource (LCB) within the NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre you will be responsible for the collection, storage, retrieval and analysis of samples from patients and controls. The LCB is a high-throughput  laboratory where we routinely work on large numbers of human biological specimens, processing and storing specimens such as serum, plasma, urine  and buffy coat samples. We also work with a number of complex automated systems for -20°C storage, plating and high throughput automated DNA extraction. This is an exciting time for the LCB, with new studies coming on board as well as a rise in researcher’s requesting access to samples and/or data from the resource.

Specific scientific activities include isolation of DNA, RNA, plasma and serum samples and the quantification, normalisation and plating of DNA for genotypic analysis. You will also be responsible for overseeing the laboratory areas, equipment and storage systems within the LCB, including automated laboratory equipment, centrifuges, haematology analsyer, fridges and freezers, ensuring they are maintained to the required standards to allow research to be carried out.

You will work closely alongside the LCB Manager, clinical team and Informatics team to maintain and improve laboratory processes and to assist in the set-up, implementation and operation of new studies.

About you

With an honours degree or equivalent in a relevant biological subject you will have the experience of working in a biosciences laboratory environment, with processing blood samples, extracting and analysing DNA, and handing human biological samples. Experience of working to GCP and HTA regulations would be desirable but is not essential, as would previous involvement in sample processing for clinical studies, writing SOPs and using automated laboratory systems.

You will also need excellent interpersonal skills in order to build and maintain relationship across the LCB, the wider Cardiovascular theme and colleagues in the University and UHL Trust.
