About the role

Mechanics of Materials Research Group at University of Leicester is seeking to appoint a Research Associate based at School of Engineering.  You will work primarily with Professor Bo Chen on his EPSRC Early Career Fellowship 2019-2024.

Your role would be to use synchrotron X-ray based large-scale experimental facilities to understand high-temperature deformation and fracture behaviour of 316L stainless steels produced by both conventional means and additive manufacturing techniques. You will work closely with academic and industrial collaborators from University of Oxford and EDF Energy UK as well as several of Prof Chen’s international research partners at China.

You will undertake regular visits to Oxford Materials and may spend extended periods at Oxford working with Prof. James Marrow on analysis of data obtained by advanced material characterisation using diffraction and tomography-based techniques. You will also undertake travels within the UK and internationally to participate in experiments and for research meetings.

About you

With a PhD in a relevant subject, you will have expert knowledge in a field relevant to physical metallurgy of steels or relevant metallic materials or solid mechanics. You will have a track record of data analysis of X-ray based experiments, alongside a track record of high-quality peer-reviewed journal publications.

You will be a self-starter with a flexible approach to work, as well as experience of collaborative, interdisciplinary or cross-disciplinary research.
