About the role
In this role you will lead and deliver the digital computer aided technical design aspects of the STAR (Space Technology Applications from Research) using a variety of design tools and software to aid industry on a wide range of artefacts and sectors including Life Sciences/Biotech, transport, space instrumentation, energy, Food and Drink and creative industry sectors.  This work will be focussed on systems design for prototypes and manufacture of one off items along with consultancy work to aid SME based industry and will be based on Computer Aided Design using Siemens NX software.  You will provide technical design support in the project in support of the successful delivery of the outputs and ultimately sustainability of the Centre by proactively building and maintaining research, business and industry links and activity, aligned with the University’s space and earth observation and engineering expertise. 
STAR (Space Technology Applications from Research) is a new high-tech research and development centre (part-funded by European Regional Development Fund) within the College of Science and Engineering and based on campus.  The STAR centre will provide design, electronic and 3D manufacturing expertise and technology demonstrations in composites, plastics and metals to SMEs in Leicester and Leicestershire to develop and enhance new products and material through Research and Innovation.  The dedicated high tech serviced facility offers a new and bespoke service to industry for design, testing, diagnostic, prototyping and manufacturing.
In addition you will assist the Academic leads, Business Manager and Project team to deliver the business plan, supporting qualifying SME’s and industry to become more innovative and as a result launch new products, services or new processes.

About you
With a good undergraduate degree in engineering design or physical sciences, you will have extensive knowledge of design tools and software used to deliver commercial and technical designs and solutions. In addition, you will have a track record of delivering commercial engineering services to the aerospace, the space instrumentation or the transport sector.
As a self-starter with a keen eye for detail, you will have the ability to analyse and interpret complex data, giving your expert opinion to STAR clients and other team members.
