About the role

Many countries have targeted large point sources and vehicles to address air pollution. Ammonia (NH3), mostly from agriculture, is a large component of fine particles (PM2.5) hazardous to health, but policies to directly regulate NH3 from agriculture requires accurate estimates of emissions.

In this work, the successful candidate will use satellite observations of NH3and the state-of-the-science GEOS-Chem model to infer NH3 emissions in the UK, interpret spatial and seasonal patterns in emissions, and evaluate and improve the UK National Atmospheric Emission Inventory (NAEI).

The project is funded by the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs(DEFRA) and is the first case study of its kind to directly integrate Earth observations in national air quality policy (http://maraisresearchgroup.co.uk/ukaq.html). The successful candidate will be supervised by Dr Eloise Marais at University of Leicester and work with National Centre for Earth Observations (NCEO) collaborators at RAL Space (Drs Brian Kerridge and Richard Siddans) and University of Leeds (Prof Martyn Chipperfield and Dr Richard Pope).

About you
To be successful in this role you will hold the below qualifications and experience:
·        Hold (or soon to be awarded) a PhD in a relevant field
·        Computational skills (Unix/Linux and a computer programming language)
·        Lead authorship of at least one peer-reviewed publication
·        Experience communicating results at international conferences and non-academic meetings
·        Familiarity with inference of emissions from satellite observations
