About the role

The University of Leicester wishes to appoint a dynamic new Head of Tax to lead our Tax Team through a period of transformation. This pivotal role ensures tax understanding and compliance across the University and its subsidiaries. As part of the finance Senior Management Team, you will support the development of the finance function and champion its people.

As Head of Tax, you will provide strategic input into setting the overall tax strategy and supporting policies for the University ensuring the organisation is fully tax compliant, plans for future changes in tax legislation and identifies opportunities to maximise recovery of tax. In addition, you will provide tax support services to key strategic projects of the University in the UK and overseas and be the University lead for VAT, corporation, and employment tax matters.

The ideal candidate will also drive the team in developing a more strategic approach, and more efficient workflow, based on a re-evaluation of current processes, considering the University’s tax risks and what constitutes proportionate mitigations. This will support activity to enhance visibility and understanding of the Tax Team and improve engagement with stakeholders, through training delivery and audit checks.

About you

We are seeking a Qualified Chartered Tax Advisor with expertise in VAT, Employment, and Corporate Taxes in the UK. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in advising organisations, interacting with HMRC and professional advisors, and providing technical tax advice. Leadership skills are essential, with the ability to adapt leadership style to support team needs and tasks, focusing on team engagement and motivation. It is crucial for the candidate to align with our values of inclusivity, inspiration, and impact.

The role will be appointed on a WorkSmart basis. WorkSmart is an agile working approach, meaning, for part of the week you'll work remotely, and for the other part you'll be working on campus. Current members of the finance Senior Management Team try to work on campus at least 1-2 times a week on average.
