About the role

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to join the University of Leicester’s Department of Microbiology and Infection (MI) on a full-time fixed-term contract until 30th June 2028. The post is funded by the LEO Foundation and will focus on investigating bacteriophage-encoded endolysins, particularly those found in Staphylococcus phages that encode two distinct endolysins. You will lead and contribute to cutting-edge research exploring the structural and functional relationships between these enzymes, helping to advance our understanding of bacteriophage biology and the development of novel antimicrobial approaches.

Working both independently and collaboratively, you will design and undertake molecular, microbiological and biochemical experiments, including protein expression, purification and functional characterisation. You will analyse and interpret data, contribute to publications and conference presentations, develop collaborations within the University and beyond, and support the mentorship of students and junior researchers. As part of our research community, you will contribute to a culture of open, inclusive and impactful research that transforms lives through discovery and innovation.

About you

You will hold a PhD in microbiology or a closely related discipline, or possess equivalent experience, together with substantial expertise in microbiology, molecular microbiology or biochemistry. You will have experience of recombinant protein expression and purification, molecular cloning, enzyme characterisation and the investigation of bacterial systems, ideally including Staphylococcus aureus, bacteriophages and antimicrobial proteins. You will be confident in designing and delivering high-quality research, adapting methodologies where required and contributing to the development of new research opportunities.

You will be an excellent communicator with the ability to work effectively with internal and external collaborators, contribute positively to a team environment and support the development of students and colleagues. We welcome applicants who share the University’s commitment to being inclusive, inspiring and impactful, and who value academic freedom, open debate and diverse perspectives.
