About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Division of Microbiology and Infection as a Research Associate focusing on the characterisation of phage proteins. Working closely with the lead protein scientist, you will contribute to advancing understanding of novel bacteriophage proteins, their structure and their therapeutic potential. Your work will include contributing expert knowledge to experimental design, driving forward research milestones, and supporting the collection, analysis and interpretation of experimental data. You will also play an active part in disseminating research outputs locally, nationally and internationally, representing the University at conferences and contributing to publications, grant applications and wider knowledge exchange.

You will be encouraged to collaborate across the University and with external partners, engaging in departmental activities, seminars and public engagement to strengthen the reach of the research. The role offers the opportunity to work within a supportive, innovative and inclusive academic environment where you will contribute to a wider programme of impactful research. As a valued member of the University’s research community, you will also be encouraged to support institutional activities such as open days and graduation events.

About you

You will hold a PhD in chemical biology, biochemistry, structural biology or an equivalent discipline, with postdoctoral experience in biochemistry and structural biology. You will bring strong specialist knowledge of protein expression, purification and characterisation, alongside experience in molecular cloning and established analytical techniques including SDS‑PAGE, Western blotting, enzyme assays and kinetic analyses. Evidence of high‑quality research outputs, strong analytical problem‑solving skills and experience with X‑ray crystallography and/or cryo‑electron microscopy are essential. You will be an effective communicator, able to present complex information clearly to a range of audiences, and willing to contribute to mentoring and guiding students and junior colleagues.

You will be an enthusiastic collaborator with the ability to work both independently and as part of a collegiate team, showing commitment to continual professional development and contributing proactively to a positive and inclusive research culture. Experience in supervising postgraduate students, performing bioinformatic or statistical analysis, or working within multisite teams would be advantageous. The University of Leicester is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion, and we welcome applicants who share these values and are ready to contribute to a community that is inclusive, inspiring and impactful.
