About the role

We are seeking a Research Associate to join the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Leicester. This exciting role is part of the UK Space Agency-funded project, a collaboration between the University and TWI Ltd, focused on pioneering space robotic welding technology for in-orbit repair and assembly. You will lead research in areas such as digital twin development, metallurgy modelling, and prototype fabrication for an innovative welding end-effector, contributing to the advancement of In-Space Servicing, Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM).

Working across the University of Leicester's main campus and Space Park Leicester, you will collaborate with world-leading experts and industry partners to deliver cutting-edge solutions. The role also involves supporting graduate students, presenting findings at international conferences, and contributing to publications and project reports. This is an opportunity to make a significant impact in a rapidly growing research area while engaging with a diverse and inspiring academic community.

About you

You will hold a PhD (or equivalent experience) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline. Demonstrated expertise in welding or metallurgical process modelling, or in robotics, space systems, or digital twin development, is essential. A strong record of peer-reviewed publications and experience in experimental or simulation-based research relevant to advanced manufacturing or space systems will be expected.

You will bring excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and strong communication skills for presenting research to varied audiences. Familiarity with robotic end-effector design, automation, or space manufacturing technologies is desirable.
