About the role

We are seeking a Laboratory Teaching Experimental Officer to join the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Leicester. This is a pivotal role within Central Technical Services, where you will lead the organisation, development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate laboratory-based teaching. You will work closely with academic staff, demonstrators and technical teams to ensure high-quality practical teaching aligned with Royal Society of Biology accreditation standards. Your responsibilities will include managing health and safety across teaching laboratories, preparing technical resources for modules, and supporting outreach activities.

You will also play a key role in mentoring and training teaching technicians and demonstrators, ensuring they are equipped to deliver an excellent student experience. The role involves contributing to curriculum development, supervising MSc classes, and supporting postgraduate training in tissue culture and other specialist techniques. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of practical teaching in a dynamic and research-active school committed to innovation and excellence.

About you

You will hold a PhD in a bioscientific discipline or possess equivalent experience, with a strong background in laboratory work across a broad range of biological sciences. Your experience in delivering and supporting wet lab practicals at undergraduate and postgraduate levels will be essential, alongside your ability to manage staff and resources effectively. A thorough understanding of health and safety regulations, excellent communication skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving are key attributes for success in this role.

You will be a motivated and adaptable individual, capable of working independently and collaboratively in a busy academic environment. Your ability to plan and prioritise a wide range of activities, coupled with a commitment to professional development and inclusivity, will align with the University’s VITAL values—Valuing People, Innovators, Together, Accountable, Leaders. At Leicester, we are proud of our diverse community and are committed to fostering an inclusive culture where everyone can thrive.
