About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to join the University of Leicester as a Senior Research and Innovation Associate within the School of Archaeology and Ancient History. You will lead the foodways strand of the AHRC-funded project, Many New Worlds, which examines multi-material archaeological assemblages in the Caribbean. This role requires a high degree of autonomy and offers the chance to shape a key aspect of an innovative research programme.

You will collaborate closely with Principal Investigators and Co-Investigators to develop and execute research strategies, manage analytical studies in the UK and Caribbean, and coordinate fieldwork activities. Your work will involve advancing novel methods in archaeological science, particularly archaeozoology, producing impactful publications, and presenting findings at national and international forums. Leadership within the team will be critical, from mentoring colleagues to supporting administrative and project management tasks. Additionally, you will contribute to public engagement and knowledge exchange, strengthening the University’s global research reputation.

This role offers unique opportunities to travel, conduct hands-on research, and work with international collaborators, contributing to the University’s mission of creating knowledge that delivers real-world impact.
About you
We are seeking a highly motivated researcher with a PhD in archaeological science, zooarchaeology, or a related discipline, or with equivalent demonstrable experience. A strong publication record and expertise in archaeozoological datasets are essential, with additional skills in archaeobotanical investigation considered an asset. Experience in developing novel methodologies, managing collaborative research projects, and engaging with diverse stakeholders is vital.

You should be a skilled problem-solver with the ability to work both independently and within a team. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are critical for disseminating complex findings to specialist and public audiences. A commitment to personal professional development and the ability to inspire and mentor others is expected.

Desirable attributes include familiarity with Caribbean archaeology and proficiency in Spanish.
