About the role

The University of Leicester is seeking an exceptional candidate for the prestigious Kusuma Fellowship in Cardiology, based in the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at Glenfield Hospital, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. Funded by the Kusuma Trust UK, this is a unique opportunity to undertake a three-year PhD (with the possibility of a 12-month extension) focusing on novel risk stratification methods for patients with prior myocardial infarction (MI) to reduce sudden cardiac death.

This research will build on the University’s success in cardiac electrophysiology, including the development of LifeMap, led by Professor André Ng and Dr Will Nicolson. The role includes conducting clinical studies, obtaining ethics approvals, recruiting patients, analysing data, and disseminating findings through national and international platforms. Alongside your research, you will have the chance to engage in teaching and low-level clinical cardiology activity, with opportunities for training in clinical electrophysiology and cardiac imaging.

About you

We are looking for an ambitious and motivated cardiology trainee (ST3 level or above) with a strong interest in advancing cardiac electrophysiology and patient outcomes. You will hold an MB BS or equivalent, full GMC registration, and MRCP or equivalent. Experience in cardiology and an enthusiasm for conducting innovative clinical research are essential.

You should have excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team. A flexible attitude, strong organisational skills, and a commitment to meeting deadlines are vital. Experience in research, including publications in high-quality journals, will be an advantage. A commitment to developing statistical and data analytics skills is expected, alongside a desire to disseminate your findings through international conferences and publications.

Additional information

Informal enquiries are welcome and should be made to Professor Andre Ng on [email protected]

As part of the University’s ongoing commitment to professional development, this role will also be considered on a seconded basis for existing staff members. Please ensure this is discussed with your line manager prior to applying. More information regarding secondments can be found here
