About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to join our team working on satellite data from space for observing the Earth and environmental change. Our National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) has received funding from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) to develop a pathfinder EO Data Hub, developing new concepts and demonstrating the usage and access to the best of Earth Observation (EO) data. This is an important new national project.

The EO Data Hub will offer new services and test new data acquisition and processing models, for the first time bringing together publicly funded and commercial satellite data, together with data quality checks and information. The access to commercial satellite data will particularly benefit users wishing to investigate high spatial resolution effects. In addition, the EO Data Hub will also provide an interface to the new UK EO Climate Information Service.

This position will maintain data access systems for the Earth Observation data through online computing systems. As the EO Data Hub Research Data Technician you will become an expert in handling of relevant data and improving the access to data from multiple sources. You will have an important role supporting a wide range of external users operating varied projects and services. You will work closely with Leicester and other NCEO researchers, and have the opportunity to engage with space agencies and companies. The job will have a core component maintaining and managing systems but also have an agile component responding to different needs and transformations of the systems in place.

This is a unique opportunity to work on a national UK project with a range of interested users of satellite Earth Observation data including government, industry and researchers. The role will provide fascinating insights into imagery and derived datasets which are increasingly prominent in daily life. The post holder will enjoy the excitement of space, supporting datasets from newly launched satellites and interacting with space agencies. The National Centre for Earth Observation is a specialist research centre with staff across a number of UK universities and research institutes. You will be based at the unique Space Park Leicester, working with others who are expert in computation and software for satellite data access and analysis.

There may be opportunity for the post to be extended dependant on funding.
